UK experts urged to invest at home Local businesspeople Sunday urged the non-resident Bangladeshis living in the UK to come up with investment, particularly in the manufacturing sector, to help country’s economy grow at a faster pace exploiting its potential. The call was made in a meeting between the leaders of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and the visiting mayor of Tower Hamlets, London, Shafiqul Haque. FBCCI organised the meeting at its auditorium with the apex trade body’s president, Mir Nasir Hossain, in the chair. The FBCCI president said the expatriate Bangladeshis living in the United Kingdom usually invest in real-estate sector in the country, which hardly contributes to the overall economy. ‘Investment by non-resident Bangladeshis in manufacturing sector can play an important role, and you can invest even in joint venture,’ he told the mayor, to convey the message to his compatriots in the UK. The business leader also invited British investors to investment in gas exploration and gas-based industries, infrastructure development, including electricity, port, telecommunications and hi-tech products, in Bangladesh. He said there are also good prospects for technical and marketing collaborations in several sectors like fish processing, food and vegetable processing, fish hatcheries and service sector like education and healthcare. ‘Investment in Bangladesh, either in cent percent foreign investment or in joint venture, can be a win-win situation for both the investors and the recipient Bangladesh companies,’ he said. Nasir apprised that the country has a vast pool of educated skilled and semi-skilled workforce, numbering over 60 million, which is highly motivated, easily trainable and highly adaptable to new technologies and disciplines. The UK can import this skilled and semi-skilled manpower from Bangladesh to employ them in different British companies, he proposed. Speaking at the meeting, the mayor of Tower Hamlets, Shafiqul Haque, said that the UK needs huge hands for work, particularly nurses, doctors, and engineers. The Bangladeshi-origin British mayor invited the local businessmen to invest in various potential sectors in the UK. He also assured his all-out support to the single-country Bangladesh trade fair to be organised by the FBCCI in London in November next. FBCCI first vice-president Mohammad Ali, vice-president Dewan Sultan Ahmed and editor of the UK-based Weekly Bangla Mirror MA Aziz were among others present at the meeting. |
